The Paradox of Pessimism and Hope in Cirilo F. Bautista鈥檚 鈥淚lang Aeta mula sa Botolan鈥
This lecture explores one of the virtues of the poetry of National Artist for Literature Cirilo F. Bautista鈥攑aradox; primarily, the paradox of pessimism and hope vis-脿-vis the concerns, dilemmas, and social phenomena of his time until the present. This lecture also examines the insight and influence of Bautista鈥檚 poems, which rely on the idea that language is both greatly significant and insufficient to, in his words, 鈥渆xpress our thoughts and feelings. This idea gave rise to his formulation of 鈥渟ugat ng salita鈥 and 鈥渒irot ng kataga鈥濃攚hich became the key concepts of his two poetry books in Filipino.

Held in celebration of the Philippine Literature Month and the World Book Day, the event shall feature a craft lecture on biofiction by Katigbak-Lacuesta and a conversation between her and literature professor Shirley O. Lua about the book.

Assembling Alice is a portrait of a woman as much as it is a portrait of the times she lived in. Alice Feria came of age during the commonwealth period, survived both the occupation and the war, and did not write of her experiences as much as she spoke of them to those in her inner circle. Her experiences were sublimated into editorials she wrote for a small magazine called The Filipino Home Companion where she wrote of nation-building and what it meant or should mean to be a Filipino after the second world war. Assembling Alice is about the stories she told, and have been told about her.

Mookie Katigbak-Lacuesta is the author of four poetry collections: The Proxy Eros (2008), Burning Houses (2013), Hush Harbor (2017), and Eros Redux (2019). She obtained an MFA from the New School University in 2004, and has since taught in major universities in Manila. Katigbak-Lacuesta has also co-edited various literary Filipino poetry anthologies for the Cordite Poetry Review and Vagabond Press. Widely-awarded for her work in the Philippines, Katigbak-Lacuesta has also been the Filipino delegate to international literary festivals in Rotterdam, Medell铆n, San Francisco, Macau, and Kuala Lumpur. FROM LITO CASAJE:

ABOUT NOKTURNAL AND SALVADOR/JAVIER

My plays and screenplays resonate between the mundane and the sublime, and are my way of expressing the truth.

We all possess shades of light and dark, and everything in between. We are capable of murder and mayhem as well as martyrdom and sainthood, even simultaneously, or in a limited space for that matter.

Whatever prevails in our consciousness is shaded by this deterministic binary. To put things simply, our consciousness is dependent on the uniqueness of two things: how we are born, and how we are involuntarily raised in a world we never chose to live in. Though this deterministic equation probably describes who we are and how different we are from each other, it should not confine and define us. We must go beyond it, beyond psychology, beyond Freud, in order to fairly and justifiably describe who we really are.

As we continue to don a thousand masks in the everyday course of our lives, we realize that there is more to this binary difference that makes us who we are and who we are not. What we were yesterday is not what we are today, and likewise, not who we will be tomorrow, no matter how marked or miniscule the changes will be. We are constantly evolving every day, however little, and we鈥檇 like to think that we continue to evolve into our beautiful selves each day.

For this forum, the speakers shall share their thoughts on the topic 鈥渨riting amidst / against the pandemic. Indeed, why and how do physicians write in the midst of a pandemic? Some of the questions our speakers may address include: What are the interstices between writing and healing? Why did they choose to become doctors? How did they become writers? How has the pandemic affected their clinical and writing praxis? How has the pandemic changed the way they view the sciences and their limits as well as the human body and mortality?

This event is part of BNSCWC鈥檚 Literature and the Sciences Project, which aims to boost collaborations and critical/creative exchanges between scientists and artists; and to promote Philippine literature written by and about physicians and other/allied health professionals.

Sad-sadan, Happy-hapihan: Mga Kuwento ng Pag-ibig听(UP Press)

Kung Ang Siyudad Ay Pag-ibig听(UP Press)

LECTURE

The Biographer鈥檚 Dilemma:
The Creative Challenges of Writing Biography

by

Joe Jackson

16 March 2019
9:00-11:00 a.m. (Saturday)
Philippe Jones Lhuillier Conference Room,
14F Henry Sy Sr. Hall
De La Salle University, Taft Avenue, Manila

How does one write an engaging biography of a historical figure when it鈥檚 hard enough to write a short personal bio for a job application? How does one distill the mysteries of character through such filters as historical comprehension and passing time? More simply, how does one inhabit another鈥檚 mind? Admittedly, it鈥檚 hard. The creative challenges faced by the biographer are like those of the writer of fiction, memoir, and the personal essay; are similar to the professional 鈥渃raft鈥 of the journalist or clinical psychologist. But with variations. 鈥淐haracter鈥 is the heartbeat of any empathetic endeavor, but how does one make one鈥檚 subject live? The author reflects upon his own work while drawing on his experiences as a death-row reporter and suicide counselor in the USA.

Joe Jackson听is the author of one novel and seven works of nonfiction, including听Black Elk: The Life of an American Visionary,听winner of the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography and the Society of American Historians鈥 Francis Parkman Prize. Jackson holds an MFA from the University of Arkansas, was recently the Mina Hohenberg Darden Endowed Chair of Creative Writing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA., and was an investigative reporter for the Norfolk听Virginian-Pilot,听where he covered criminal justice and the state鈥檚 Death Row. His journalism resulted in the acquittal of a man wrongly convicted of murder, the federal investigation of a jail in which sixteen prisoners died of medical neglect, and the recantations of two men whose testimony sent men to Death Row. Over the years he has been chased by an elephant and two rhinos in Zimbabwe, greeted by killer wasps and a big anaconda in the Amazon, and fired upon by Soviet troops in Lithuania. Such moments have taught him that panic is rarely the best option, a good mantra for writers facing deadlines. He is in Manila researching an extended narrative on the Spanish-American and Philippine-American wars, told from the viewpoint of the Cuban, Filipino, and American participants.

Mula Mingaw Tungong Kalipay:
Panimulang Sipat sa Kontemporanyong Panulaang Waray
Jerry B. Gr谩cio

EXPLORING THE BAKLA-TRANS CONNECTION:
THEORIZING TRANS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Speakers

Dr. Jaya Jacobo
Dr. Mikee Inton

28 February 2019
4:15-6:00pm
Yuchengco Seminar Room 507-509
De La Salle University, Manila

澳门六合彩 the Event & Lecture Abstracts
Trans studies is one of the most exciting fields of scholarship in the LGBTQIA studies and in theory and criticism in general.听 But what is the state of trans studies in the Philippines?听 What theorizing has been done so far?听 How do we explain the inviolable kinship between the bakla and the transgender? How do we conceptualize trans history vis-脿-vis the history of听kabaklaan?

Mikee Inton:听听听In this very short talk, I鈥檇 like to problematize the points of convergence and divergence between 鈥渢rans鈥 and 鈥渂akla. I examine how trans movements in the Philippines first started, and how the human rights framework may have incidentally become a form of neocolonization bent on erasing local practices and knowledge of non-normative genders. I argue that while both global trans discourse and听kabaklaan听are rooted in an interiorized disconnect between the body, mind, and spirit,听kabaklaan听offers an alternative discourse to this interiority that does not pathologize or medicalize this disconnect. I further argue that because many other performative aspects ofkabaklaan听resonate with global trans discourses, local social movements have adopted these global discourses in framing their struggle under Human Rights frameworks.

Jaya Jacobo:听听How has the 鈥渂akla鈥 been constituted in discourse? In this talk, I seek to sketch out the bakla in language and interpret her as a figure gendered by dissemination, as one traversing gender itself, as transgender, if one wills, and at the same time, as a figure who cannot seem to navigate the terrain of identity. First, I do a close reading of the听Vocabulario de la lengua tagala听(1613, 1794, 1860) by looking at the bakla as imminent being, a power that dissimulates the sense through transformation. Then I locate in the听Mahal na Passion听(1814) how this potency becomes an instance of debilitation, which shall become the premise of subsequent representations of the bakla鈥檚 gender. From here, I read the 鈥渂inabae鈥 as a problematic queer figure in听Pusong Walang Pag-ibig听(1910). I end by demonstrating how these contradictions on the bakla are elaborated and confounded even further in contemporary poetry, through a selection of poems from the 1st GlobalGRACE Gender and Cultures of Equality-University of the Philippines LGBTQ Writers鈥 Workshop (2018).

This symposium is one of the projects in The Asia-Pacific Rainbow Initiative of the Literature Department of De La Salle University.
